My Fabulous Friend Fiona and her first feature: Fred

Isn't she pretty as a picture?Fiona is the coolest thing I ever found on Craigslist. Her husband walked into my house last year to buy some cool chairs and ended up giving my husband his business card on the way out the door (do I smell a "bro-mance"?) After closing my store in September, I got the nerve up to call him for a creative job but when I went to meet him in person he decided I was better suited to work for myself (a-hem, you can't write shit like this all day at Weiden & Kennedy!) But more importantly, he thought I should have coffee with his wife and apply for the job of BFF. His instincts were right. One of Fiona's famous "free" finds! We went on a blind date and when I saw her standing at the counter with her Orla Keily purse that she found for $5 at a yard sale I knew I would be texting her five times a day by the end of the week. We've been hanging out ever since because we are both graphic designers with (eerily) similar taste and we're both Virgos (which means we're likely to organize your medicine cabinet if we use your bathroom.)

So I begged Fiona to be a part of Nifty Living from the start. She is the blog aficionado between the two of us but she wants it to be MY blog (because she's either chicken or battling a cough syrup addiction, you decide.) She also insists that I post at least every other day so I think it's fair that she pitches in and becomes my first contributor! Lets hope she keeps these cool posts coming, I know she's tacking up for her very own "yard sailing" section because this gal is a freakin' "bargain pirate" and finds the coolest crap ever ("ardy- har- ar!")

Meet Fred; MAKING DOLLS OUT YOUR KID'S DRAWINGS
(by Fiona)

Last week while my sisters boys were over, I instigated the creation of Fred. "Who wants to make a stuffy out of a drawing?" Gus was in..

Iron Fabric I gave him a piece of paper, a marker and about 15 minutes.
Iron Fabric Then we zeroed in on the winner....

Get a piece of paperand some Super 77 ... and I made a loose drawing in the size I thought he should be.
Spray the paper evenly and wait a minute till it's dry. I took a pile of my husbands old shirts and let Gus choose which one would make up the body. For the extra bits we used felt and barkcloth scraps.
I thought this would go pretty quickly but since I've sewn a total of 7 times in my life it took a couple of hours. I couldn't get the front and back pieces of the head to line up on the machine so I did it by hand. Turns out it looked a little bit like hair that way so it was fine. We glued the face pieces with tacky glue but I would sew them on in the future so you could throw it in the washer. Time will tell if those pieces stay put. In Gus' drawing, he has teeth between the double arms. Doable, but not with the time we had so I used pinking sheers for cutting in that area and just sewed wrong sides together.
Spray the paper evenly and wait a minute till it's dry.

The black pocket was an addition to allow Fred to hold on the tooth that Gus lost that morning!

Amazingly cute! That Fred guy is a doll. Gus loves him (he's a doll too - I'm his mother). Thanks Fiona.
