I have been collecting these vintage games for quite a while. I haven't spent more than maybe ten bucks on any of them so they are quite affordable to collect by my standards.
Within ten minutes of moving to Portland I put the matching gameboards on the picture shelf of my dining room but I never did anything with the boxes which were arguably cooler. Last week I decided to ditch a gold mirror (see below in the "before" picture) and sold it Craigslist pretty quickly. I replaced the ratty Angela Adams rug with this gigantic shag rug from Target that cost a mere $150! We were surprised when the bright rug opened up the room so nicely and it almost never looks dirty because it's so texturized. My vintage click back sofa (in my favorite color) cost me $220. (See one of my very first posts about looking for the perfect sofa here.) Coffee table and side table cost me $110. Orange phone $2. I can't brag about the lamps being especially thrifty, these were pretty pricey and I had them leftover from Hello Martha's Vineyard.

It had a huge picture of me with my kids behind the counter ringing up customers (in lieu of hiring any additional staff with such a limited budget). A sweetheart reporter showed up and shadowed me for three days and decided that my personal story was much more interesting than the "shop local because Mom and Pop businesses are struggling" story that I originally pitched in an email. The article drew lots of attention. Most of it was people walking into my store where they had free access to tell me they felt sorry for me. The worst of it was when I was standing on line for a port-a-potty at a concert and after ten minutes of waiting the gal in front of me turned around and said "I'm really sorry about your store". The gal in front of her said "me too" and that's when I realized that I had lost my anonymity. I felt like the biggest-loser-micro-celebrity in Portland. I had my fifteen minutes of fame and it was for failing to keep a plucky retro-modern general store above ground while using child labor to save on babysitting and retail help.

The most exciting thing to come out of that article was that I received an unsolicited email from Wieden+Kennedy. Someone there read the article and they wanted to see my portfolio. The article mentioned that I had been quite the accomplished graphic designer prior to opening "Hello." I had designed invitations for numerous celebrities like Steven Spielberg, Rosanne and Bruce Willis (to name a few) and somehow I parlayed that into redesigning reuters.com in 2002. Frankly, I made so much money in 2002 that I am still making tax payments to the IRS. It was fucking awesome. And someone at Wieden+Kennedy wanted to see farther up my skirt.

So in the middle of closing my business, I took 72 consecutive hours off from life to organize my portfolio and redesign my resume. I finished it at 3 am the morning before I promised to deliver it and I even made a clever airport hang tag for my briefcase that looked something like an old school airport luggage tag and included a checklist of my talents, mentioning that I made the freaking thing at 3 am and was therefore a workaholic (which I am) and creatively indispensable. I printed my resume on a faux-yellow pad with custom illustrations of stamps and put on a retro clip board for them to keep. The next day I walked up the stairs to the Mecca of Portland Cool and meekly handed my portfolio to the receptionist.

You can only imagine the fantasies that were running through my head. I imagined that the four years of sacrifice at the store and the big move to Portland was finally going to pay off. I was going to enter the ranks of the uber hip, my secret decoder ring was in the mail! I was ready to dress exactly like that busty redhead on Madmen, line my cubicle in my 500+ designer vinyl toys and attend private Decemberists concerts. Most importantly, I was going to be the most prolific art director in the history of advertising because I can write! I have imagination up the kazoo! I'm funny! I couldn't wait to casually tell my new boss that I had once made it to the third year of the Groundlings... somehow explaining that my improvisation skills were what made me so quick-witted and funny! In my mind I was PERFECT FOR ADVERTISING, perhaps over-qualified! I owned a cool store and knew all about cool shit. I was the only forty year-old Mom in Portland with a wicked mash-up collection. I wasn't a flaky twenty year-old either. My breeding days were over and I had already proven I would throw my children under the bus in a millisecond for the right job, hadn't I? WHERE ELSE COULD YOU FIND A DESIGNER WITH THIS MUCH PERSONALITY?

It's easy to guess where this is headed. After about a month of daydreaming I finally got up the nerve to ask for my portfolio back. Later I received an email to the extent of "Your portfolio is impressive but outdated, keep us updated on your progress." I couldn't believe they didn't even want to meet the scrappy gal behind the story that had caught their attention. I didn't even have the opportunity to seduce them with my funny self-deprecating jokes, my witty comebacks, my topical anecdotes! They had cut me off at the knees because I didn't get to use my secret power: I have never NOT gotten a job after someone met me. Filled with a mild brew of piss and vinegar I almost couldn't resist writing back:"OF COURSE IT'S OUTDATED, YOU JUST READ A PATHETIC ARTICLE ABOUT ME SLAVING AWAY AT MY RETAIL STORE FOR MAGIC BEANS FOR FOUR YEARS! WHAT THE HELL DID YOU EXPECT?" But I didn't write that email. Later, a creative consultant suggested that they purposely made me spin my wheels just to check me out, I doubt it was that thoughtful. It was just a case of "odd girl gets a second glance from the Quarterback at the prom and temporarily loses her mind," that's all. On a funnier note, I did have the thought of parking a hotdog cart in front of their office with a sign that read: "Logos, $1000, Websites $2500! I'll beat any price at Wieden+Kennedy and I need less swag to do it!" That was really fun to think about too.

What I did end up doing was sneaking into Wieden+Kennedy last night with my husband to see a free concert. Funny I brought Scott, he's usually a pretty grumpy date but we walked through the halls giggling in amazement, hoping no one would realize we weren't supposed to be there. What got us in trouble were the snacks. Their offices were something like Microsoft circa 1992. There was free food and candy everywhere and Scott and I were so amazed that we really couldn't stop ourselves from taking some. I was fond of the caramel cremes and milk duds. Scott was stuffing his pants with energy bars for the kid's lunches. It got so out of hand we decided to run out the back door only to be tempted by overflowing boxes of Moosemix which we promptly took as well. But we weren't going to miss the concert. Wieden+Kennedy had a big parking lot that looked up at the office building and people were laying blankets on the ground to get ready for the concert. We were laying down and laughing and I suddenly had the great idea to run home and blog about our adventure and the history behind it. And then the shitake mushrooms hit the fan. Jason Bateman (a.k.a. Dan Wieden) was on a huge monitor looking at us and we slowly became aware that almost everyone had us pegged for the posers we were. We ran home only to find more fashionable Portland executives rifling through our house for anything else we might have pilfered. We were still nonchalant, we had little to hide. But the tenor of the entire evening changed when a very well groomed Anne Heche came out of my home office looking very disappointed. She appreciated my tenacity and had indeed rethought her decision to discarded my portfolio so imprudently last year, but this fiasco put the nail in my coffin. (It must have been the Moosemix.) Plus my clothes were from Old Navy. I was somewhat embarrassed, mostly about my clothes, but I wasn't naked and I hadn't gotten caught picking my nose or anything. In fact I was more interested in her stunningly handsome assistant who was exactly like the guy in the new Old Spice commercials.

And then I woke up. That's what my BFF from the eighth grade and I used to say to each other. I'd say "Hey Sarah, I made out with Rick Springfield last night!" or "Hey Sarah, I think my Dad might pay for college" and then she'd say "and then you woke up?" And when I did wake up I was so disappointed that it WAS a dream that I had to take a massive "brain dump." I just couldn't hold it in! I had to go straight to the computer to write about it while I was still in my sleepy ambien-esque haze and it still seemed funny and meaningful.

I know where this bizarre dream came from. Yesterday I was working on a promotional email to send out to the 1500 people who signed up to receive emails from my old store. "If you loved Hello Portland, you'll love Run Like a Girl Design". And I spent an inordinately long time looking for the original email from Wieden+Kennedy so I could, per their request, keep them updated on how fabulous (and current) I have actually become! I never found that email but I guess it haunted me. The teaspoon of "piss and vinegar" is gone, their loss, but I guess the need for affirmation and a decent job is still there. Oh yeah, and I guess I think that guy in the old spice commercial is pretty hot.

P.S. It's just a freaking coincidence that Wieden+Kennedy created those marvelous Old Spice commercials. Go figure, I could have been the gal to hand him a dry towel after every take.

Why anyone would move from a utopia like Martha's Vineyard to Portland Oregon is a tough question. I'm sorry to tell my family and Portland friends that I weigh that decision every day. This summer when I went back to the Vineyard, I saw my three best girlfriends in the first hour of arrival, almost serendipitously because on the Vineyard you really can't drive down the street without seeing someone you know. What I didn't expect was the golfball that got stuck in my throat when my friend Mollee picked me up at the ferry. When I saw her, I realized I had repressed so many feelings about leaving such important friends and I just hadn't tapped the nerve that made me miss her and Wendy and Kathy so much.

But that's not what this is about. It was supposed to be a celebration of spring and here I am crying at my desk in my stupid hipster office again about how much I miss my Vineyard family.

Last night when I took this picture, I was picking up Piper from a "Boombox Ballet" class. This is probably the coolest way to get your kids to take ballet and I'm pretty sure I can't find a ballet class for ten bucks where my daughter dances to french hip hop music on the Vineyard. But this isn't the reason I moved to Portland, this is the reason my husband won't leave Portland.

The reason I moved to Portland is because the flowers bloom in February. Right now, if you were desperate for flowers on your way to visit a sick friend, you could get a decent bouquets off of people's yards if you didn't mind pissing them off.

The first time I visited Portland it was March and the gardens and greenery left me awestruck. The lazy-ass daffodils bloom in May on the Vineyard. The wait for any signs of leaves or buds on the trees becomes desperate. You stare up at the trees in late March and imagine you see some green only to be reminded by your equally bitter car companion that it's just a mossy fuzz. It can drive you batty and in my opinion, spring is more depressing than winter because it's so anti-climatic; it comes too late to the party, when you are already boozed out and depressed, and then it's summer.

Last night I imagined posting this picture on facebook right away and letting my Vineyard Friends brew with jealousy. I had a real "NA-NA-NA-NA-NA" feeling up my sleeve. This morning I don't feel that way at all, I hope to offer it up as some sort of excuse to people I miss and who I know miss me too.

More than half of my ideas come from necessity rather than creativity. Take last year's Valentine's day for instance. I had no presents, no plans, I was S.O.L. and I knew my two little oompa-loompas were expecting something. I hate holidays, Valentine's day included. Lord knows I love my kids, I tell them every day. But how did these holidays become so weighty? AS IF I NEED MORE CRAP to put on my unbearable teux-deux list. I resent being expected to buy my family a bunch of shizz. No one expects Dad to pull this crap out of his rear, it's always Mom. Go ahead and write your comments that say you're a great dad who organizes the holiday details and I'll kindly publish your comment and send you some tampons.

So last year I threw this admittedly lame but easy breakfast together and the kids thought for just one morning that I was Mary Freakin' Poppins. I didn't plan a thing. I woke up in the morning desperately empty-handed and decided to make pancakes. When it was time to set the table I looked around for anything pink and I thanked my lucky stars I had cranberry juice and strawberries to keep my pink theme alive.

Last year I didn't know Fiona as well I do now so I was very impressed when she made Piper this little pillow. Clearly she was pandering to be my special friend or trying to show me up in the crafts department. Why it's not stuffed in this picture beats me, but it is now and Piper LOVES stuff like this. I could tell you how to make it but take a look and guess - it's pretty easy-breezy. Put on a good movie and you'll have it done before the credits. Now that I think of it, she didn't make ANYTHING for Skyler, I guess she didn't like him as much. And while we're on topic of how great Fiona, the good witch of the NorthWest is, I know that this gal is about 110% likely to get something really thoughtful from her husband for Valentine's day. Even though he deliberately told me tonight (on the way out he door to play pool with my husband) that he hasn't gotten her "anything." Alas these two know me TOO well and are trying to make me feel better about another empty handed holiday before it even happens!

Another thing I used to sell out of at my Hello store were coupons (S-E-X coupons). These ran about ten bucks and I was always amazed that people bought them in lieu of making their own. If you really don't have any markers and paper, time, or imagination than it's likely you're bad in bed, but just for you I found a site where you can personalize and print your own.

Below you will see that I have been leafing through my old Martha Stewart Kids magazines. These magazines are collectors items at this point. They are really well thought out and not totally unreasonable when it comes to crafting expectations and capability. I found my Valentines issue and narrowed down some of the cuter, easier crafts.

Good news is that Creature Comfort is giving away one of these sweet babies (as well as Fuji's new SLR sloop camera bag). One condition of the give-away is that you write a little bit about it which I am always happy to do, especially when I am THIS inspired. Maybe Fuji will be so inspired, we gals here at Nifty Living could do a similar promotion, who knows!

A little backstory if you're not an Instant Camera junkie; Polaroid decided last year to no longer make Polaroid cameras. There were lots of groans and moans and then Fuji announced that they would continue to make film for these soon-to-be antiques we all love. Yeah Fuji! In fact I use Fuji film in my vintage Polaroid camera and I couldn't be more thankful to a single company! But on top of that - Fuji runs with the ball and creates the Instax Mini so the art of instant picture taking can live on. But guess what?... Polaroid comes back in the past month and announces they WILL start making Polaroid cameras again. I call that a full "Jay Leno" so as appreciative as I am to Polaroid for coming to their senses, my loyalty is with Fuji for now.

I took this picture of Fiona and Family with my Polaroid 340 and color Fuji film this summer.I often use my 1990s Polaroid during parties (especially kid's parties) as a memento for the guests to take home. I have a vintage Polaroid 340 that I bought on Ebay for picnics and grown up cocktail parties. When we moved from Martha's Vineyard to Portland, Oregon, we took an instant picture of each friend we sadly said good-bye to and we still have those displayed in our kitchen, even after four years.

When it comes to instant photos, the "instant gratification" is so much fun and the quality is incomparable. As much as I use CameraBag on my Iphone and Imac, I cannot (digitally) replicate the essence of an instant picture.

But my most exciting idea for THIS beautiful Fuji camera is to take an instant picture of everyone who comes over for a dinner or drink (or play date with my kids)! At "Kasa Korn" we love to entertain and even in this crappy economy we know we are "rich in friends." I intend to (very neatly) display each photo in a grid on my hallway wall. I also planned to put Hudson's brightly colored chalkboard paint* underneath so we can write dates and comments, etc. I actually had this idea prior to seeing this promotion so it's just plain serendipity!

* This is my first disclosure. Hudson Paint sent me four quarts of paint and I'm super excited to do something totally creative with it!

Stacey is the Queen of Crafts (official title) She loves doing them and does them well. For me, crafts are often much better in theory than they are in practice. Kind of like Christmas cookies, by the time you get to the frosting you just want it to end. I usually head into crafts with enthusiasm and optimism, but often don't enjoy myself during the process and am easily frustrated by my lack of determination or talent. Once in a while if the pay off is good, it's a lot of fun, and this project paid big.

Freezer stencil tutorials have been making their way around the internet for quite a while, probably because it's such a great craft. We were so chuffed by our results we wanted to share them with you. Buy some freezer paper. Choose an image. Draw it on the non waxy side of the paper or cut out an 8.5 x 11 piece and run it through your printer. We had a little trouble with this but when Stacey suggested taping it just below the edge of a regular piece of paper it ran through just fine. Use a self healing mat or a safe cutting surface and cut your image out with a sharp Exacto knife. Cut out all the black areas and save all the white pieces. You may want to do something kind of simple to begin with. Stacey did a fantastic job of cutting out the robot. I wouldn't have had the same level of precision. Iron your stencil outline on to the item you are stenciling, t-shirts, dress shirts, skirts, canvas bags, tea towels, table cloths and just about anything you can think of will work, and then place the white pieces back into the design and iron them down. We put a tea towel over the freezer paper before we ironed but I don't think it's imperative. If you happen to have placed any of your white bits upside down, they will get ironed to the tea towel but you can carefully peel them off and iron them to your project again. The next step is the ink. Place a piece of card stock or fabric that you don't mind getting stained between the layers of fabric to prevent the ink from going through. My fabric inks came with a short bristled stippling type brush but you can improvise with a regular brush or sponge. It's best to dab in an up and down direction so as not to disturb the edges of your stencil and try to get even and solid coverage. Skyler drew this gorgeous robot and since he chose silver ink on a black shirt, I suggested a white underlay of ink to create a good non absorbent base. It also keeps the color of the shirt from changing the look of the ink color. It worked perfectly. After the white coat of ink was applied, we used a blow drier to speed the process up a bit. When all the ink is good and dry, carefully remove the stencil and the small pieces with the tip of your Exacto knife. Last but not least, you need to heat set the ink with your iron. This will keep it from coming out in the wash.

The cutting and ironing part of this project are not kid friendly but picking out an image, drawing one, applying the fabric ink, drying the ink and pulling off the freezer paper to reveal the finished product are all great for kids.

Admittedly, Fiona and I have not been posting as often as we should. I'm not going to tell you that Fiona has been in an intensive sex-addiction rehab facility in Utah. Why should I? That would be way too personal. Maybe I should tell you that one of our husbands is recovering from that "enlargement" surgery we saved up for with beer can returns, maybe I shouldn't.

The real dirt is that before and after Christmas (the worst effing holiday in the whole wide world), Fiona and I have been plugging away at our new business Run Like a Girl Design. HOW THE HELL ELSE are we going to be able to subsidize our funny, anti-bourgeoisie diatribes for our loyal "Nifty" audience?

The back story is that both of us anal-retentive Virgos used to be graphic designers for like 15+ years and both went on hiatus about five years ago, seemingly simultaneously. Fiona had her cherub, Finn, and I gave birth to a big fat loser and expensive retail store called Hello Martha's Vineyard (and later Hello Portland). $400k down the drain and one really great kid are the results of our efforts but now we are ready to get behind the money train again. We're good enough, we're smart enough, and doggone it, people like us!

To be candid, I designed about five websites single-handedly last year so I have been back to graphic design for a while. I did lots of it for barter and also spent the year sharpening my programming skills. Not to mention this totally suh-weet blog. Fiona has been designing logos here and there for clients and the 52 different businesses she came up with during her toddler time. These include a cupcake cart, flowers-at-a-coffee shop delivery service, vintage consignment furniture co-op, poster company, craft fair organizer, and monkey butler training school (just to name a few...) Only one of those was fake, guess which one.

But now we are ready to roll up our sleeves! Look out world, these two gals together make one really fantastic "portfolio sandwich". Fiona is a "wicked-tight" illustrator and her logos are amazing. First time I saw them I cried in my car. Then I remembered I'm pretty good at whatever it is I do too (mind you, my portfolio spans from oodles of sarcastic greeting cards, celebrity wedding invitations to über-corporate reuters.com).

What's our angle? We're "Rainman" smart, really organized, and we don't make everything a big hassle. We're Moms for chrissake! We've wiped our kids derrieres and noses and made dinners out of canned soup and food-coloring. We're not going to make our clients run around in circles trying to make sense of their shizz, we'll do that for them. As my 1988 high school president, Pedro, once said "If you vote for me all of your wildest dreams will come true." That's it. Well, that and the fact that we're also KICK-ASS designers.

We are web designers for busy people. We offer experience for professionals who are too busy to organize and dictate every detail to their designers.

You can trust us to be thoughtful, intuitive and professional. You are in good hands knowing we will make the best decisions for you, without interrupting your work flow.

Smart, savvy and intuitive, we’ll quickly understand your business model and will target your marketing priorities better than other designers, all for the same price. That adds up to (stress free) great design, focus and value.

If you or someone you know is looking for updates to an existing website or something from scratch, tell them we'll make it easy as pie.
Oh, and we'd love to help you with your social networking needs too.

I thought I'd tip my hat to one of her faves. She found this at Nest Decorating. I was a buyer for my "Hello Store" for five years, so I was surprised to see some colorful swag I've never seen before. The company is a Danish brand called Rice and for some reason I imagine they eat nothing besides Fruitloops and Skittles. They have some retailers in the US and also have a list of online stores that carry their bright and cheery goods. Tamar at Nest Decorating found these images from their online catalog but check out her post too, there are more pretty pictures there.
I sewed the vellum pieces of paper with her contact info onto different papers (including my favorite, paint swatch samples that we made into cards).

Saturday was a busy, crafty, day. On Friday night I started a vinyl messenger bag for our dear friend Phoebe who turned eight. I finished it up by 4 pm and then I also had to come up with a birthday present for my friend Michelle by 9 o'clock!

I met Michelle when she walked into my store over two years ago.She offered her services as a merchandiser and God knows I needed her (maybe She even sent her!) Michelle didn't mind working through the night and she was great company to boot. We became fast friends and on top of that, my husband has become friends with her husband.

Friday, my office-mate Kevin needed some help with his yearly letter to friends and family. His wife was pretty pissed he hadn't done it yet and when I spent a few hours getting it on the computer and tweaking his photos and laying it out he said I was a lifesaver. I owed him a favor and I was pleased to help. I could do something that was simple for me and seemingly insurmountable for him. At the very least his wife was going to start talking to him again, at best he's was on the fast track for a roll in the hay.

So I wanted to do the same for Michelle. She is a talented interior designer but hasn't built her Portland client list yet. She has been too busy juggling life and working full-time at a furniture store in the Pearl District. Inspired by Kevin's appreciation for my simple efforts, I decided to give Michelle a business card that gave her interior decorating business a well-deserved boost. I knew she would have a hard time doing this for herself, or even asking me to do it for her. For me it was a half day of painless creativity. I had always wanted to do something with paint chip samples and my idea was that Michelle could hand out a card that perfectly suited her would-be customer. When I thought about that a little more a I added some patterned papers as well for clientele that might prefer a "cozier" design.

For the finale, I whipped up a a makeup bag made from vinyl and vintage tablecloth fabric and put the cards inside.

After all was said and done Michelle loved the thought. She did however get a new cell phone with a new (local) number. I'll have to make he cards again but I don't mind. And if you need an interior designer, her phone number is 503-915-5664. Or email her at mrae1970@hotmail.com... Crap! We did call Michelle's husband to double check her details before we made the cards but we didn't consider a new phone number (she was still using her old cell phone too!)
